Behind the Scenes: BYOC Employee Survey

Do our users want BYOC?

So all of us on the team were excited about the possibilities of BYOC, but what we hadn’t checked yet was what percentage of Softchoice laptop users would actually be interested in a program like this? At the end of the day, no matter what great technologies and policies we put in place, if we didn’t have participants, then the program REALLY wouldn’t work!

Designing surveys can be tricky, so I looked online to see if there were any standard surveys for this type of program that we could base ours on. Sadly, I couldn’t find anything so I started putting our survey together from scratch. I knew the main things that I wanted to understand were:

  • What % of employees would be interested in the program?
  • How would employees react to certain BYOC program rules and responsibilities?
  • What benefits do they see in a program like this?
  • What concerns would they have with a program like this?
  • Would different departments have different views on this program?

I then input the questions I created into our online survey tool, and Mustafa  pulled a list of all the employees that were currently using laptops to send it to. We didn’t send it to all employees since we are not going to offer this program to employees on PCs and we decided to only keep the survey open for a few days in order to create some urgency in completing it.

So before I go into the results, I want to save you the trouble of creating your own survey by sharing ours with you. Feel free to use it as a template for yours! If you are adding questions make sure to keep them clear, short and to the point. And when looking at results you want to take the 2 top box scores as your indicator of interest. So in our survey it’s the people who are “Likely” and “Very Likely”, that we considered interested in the program.

So….Survey says!

Some of the high level learnings we received from the survey were:

  • About 50% of respondents said they were “Likely” or “Extremely Likely” to join the BYOC program.
    • Our Professional services team (most technical of the bunch) were slightly higher than average at 58%
    • Our Operations team (least mobile) were slightly lower than the average at 39%
  • 88% of respondents said that they would not join the program if the cost of the laptop was not covered by Softchoice
  • The majority of respondents were “comfortable” or “very comfortable” with these responsibilities:
    • Installing mandatory anti-virus on your laptop via a self-service website
    • Accessing Softchoice resources virtually
    • Selecting and purchasing your own laptop that meets minimum requirements
  • The majority of respondents were “Not comfortable” or “Not very comfortable” with these responsibilities:
    • Re-imaging a laptop in the event of a major issue/change
    • Backing up and securing data and files stored locally on the laptop
  • Top benefits to employees were:
    • They wanted to use a different laptop/device than the corporate standard
    • Being able to consolidate 2 devices into one (not have a separate personal & corporate device)
    • Felt that they could be more productive and work anywhere, any time
    • Have the flexibility to install programs on a machine that they like to use
  • Top concerns of employees were:
    • If there would be too many corporate restrictions on what was going to be a personal device too
    • Could Softchoice wipe/see their personal data? Not wanting to mix personal and business
    • Too much added responsibility for maintenance of the machine and having to procure the machine
    • Personal financial commitment of having to maintain, update, secure the machine
    • If all corporate apps are being delivered via virtualized desktop will our network be able to support it or will apps be slow?

Overall, our survey demonstrated to us that we had enough employee interest in the program to make it worthwhile. Citrix’s BYOC had about 20% of their laptop users join the program and with 50% of our respondents showing interest now, we feel like even with drop off we’d get a good amount of participation.

When we rolled out our BYOD program, we gave employees a stipend for data use, but they had to purchase their own hardware and when we first started to think about this BYOC program we thought that maybe employees would be OK with buying their own laptop without a stipend from Softchoice. But with 88% of respondents saying they wouldn’t join if no stipend was offered, we now know that it’s a big driver.

Now with a good understanding of our users thoughts on this program, our next stage is to start designing the solution and the official policy. Stay tuned for details on those steps!
