The 3-second secret to being a green hero

In my 4 years of experience as sustainability manager at Softchoice, I’ve met hundreds of people who are really passionate about energy efficiency. And I mean really, really passionate.

But you know what? I’ve realized you don’t need to be a hyper active green-thumb to help out with this important movement. It doesn’t matter what your day job is — from IT workers to salespeople to finance gurus — you can make a big difference with a very small, very simple, first step.

This “first step” is easy, it won’t cost you a dime and it only takes three seconds — but it’s very important nonetheless.

Can you guess what it is?

What I am talking about is making a personal promise to change your energy behaviors for the better. I am a big believer in “the power of the pledge” — and I think the saying is true that all change starts from within. Simply put, before change can occur you’ve got to make a small promise, and have it in black and white, that you want to create better energy practices.

If your eyes have’t rolled off your head yet, and you are still reading this blog, then I bet you know what I am talking about.

So, as a personal favor, I want to ask all of you today to take this first baby step and fill out this form from Climate Savers — there are plenty of good organizations out there doing this, and these guys are awesome.

>> Sign the pledge

If you don’t want to give your email, you can just can just write it down on paper or send your self an email. The key is that you make the promise – something to hold yourself to.

The Climate Savers campaign estimates that, if they reach their goal, their pledges will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 54 million tons by this July 2011 — that’s the equivalent of taking more than 100 million fuel-burning cars off the road.

By the way, there’s a longer form to enrol your entire organization in the petition. If you are really serious, and you really want to win some green karma points, sign that one too 🙂 You can it here.
