CSR Energy Audit & Recommendations

Softchoice had a great CSR intern work with us over the last year. As part of her program at Seneca College in Toronto she took a current snaphot of our current energy use, and gave us some great recommendations for 2011. Here is a summary of her report:

Future State Recommendations (Energy) by Roma Malik, Seneca CSR Intern

Lighting is the largest contributor of green waste in the facility. For this I propose two energy saving projects:

Track Light Reduction

The first project entails reducing the number of light bulbs being used on each floor; the second involves a light management system. Softchoice is overly lit from artificial lights, and there is a solid source of sunlight. Upon several conversations with staff members, a couple of them were concerned with the amount of light bulbs being used everywhere as their main issue for my sustainability report.

I propose using 20% less track lights throughout floors 1 through and including 3. If done correctly the number of track lights will be reduced by 20%.

The investment cost in this project would be nothing, however implementation time will consist of planning, and assessment of unneeded light bulbs, and removal, which is estimated at 2 minutes /bulb at 30 bulbs/hour.

Light Shut-Off Program

The second project entails the management of lights being used. I propose a lights management program whereby lights are being used less often.

Big Drop Lights, compact fluorescent and long fluorescent bulbs which are being used for 24 hours would be reduced to a 12 hour span.

Desk Lamps are left on 24 hours a day, and would be used for 10 hours.

Cube Lights, Track Lights, Halogen, Sconce and Long Fluorescent Bulbs are used for a 12 hour period and I suggest reducing that to 10.

There is no investment cost in this project however, it is highly time and planning inductive, through management implementation of a shut off system for all lights after hours and some until the cleaning staff comes in, including the planning of staff to shut off their own desk lamps after hours.

PCs:

The next largest cause of green waste in energy involves the extensive use of PCs, currently running 24 hours a day, and 7 days per week. I have proposed an automatic shut down program after working hours. This would save an immense amount of energy in consumption with little to no time investment and planning. A trial period of 6 months would be ideal in demonstrating the ease in adjustment to management to attain buy-in. The goal in this project entails each PC to switch off after hours and to run on a 10 hour/day schedule. The monetary investment cost is zero and the investment time is approximately 5 days including planning and execution of roll-out to 235 PCs in the facility.

Vending Miser

Although vending machines may seem like a negligible necessity, they can account for a large waste in energy per year. Nine vending machines account for a cost of $2951.40 per year. Vending Misers are energy-saving products which reduce energy consumed by motion and internal temperature sensors to control the electricity consumption throughout the day. These systems are not to be used with perishable products. The Toronto Hydro Electric System is currently offering these products to business clients free of charge until December 31st, 2010. The implementation time is estimated at 1 day for 9 machines, with an estimated time of 40 minutes spent per machine. Labour is required in order to move the machine to clean the back surface for the Vending Miser placement & operation. This project can be easily completed with 1-2 people.
