Five Dog-Friendly Workplace Myths Busted!

dogBen and Jerry’s, Proctor and Gamble, Google and Autodesk – what do they have in common? If you guessed: ‘dog-friendly workplace’ – you’d be right!  But these corporate giants aren’t the only companies welcoming canines – Softchoice is also proud to be a dog-friendly office! And, according to a study by the American Pet Products Association, nearly 1 in 5 workplaces in America have already joined the four-legged workforce.

Of course, many organizations still have concerns about bringing dogs into the workplace. But it’s not as complicated as you might think! Robbie Eddison, Assessment Services Supervisor at Softchoice, owner of Lebowski, and a key member of our Dog Committee, has helped bust the top five myths about bringing dogs to work! [Read more…]

Sometimes we all need a little reminder

I was leaving the Softchoice gym today when I noticed the new signs near all of the light switches that were put up by the Green Team. Some may think a sign is not necessary (and maybe even a waste of paper), but you’d be surprised how many times I’ve walked into the gym to lights, TVs and the stereo running without anyone being in there.

At home, since I pay my own power bills, I find myself so much more committed to turning things off. I never leave the TV on when I’m not watching it. Before I leave the house, I do a last sweep to turn off all the lights. Sometimes even when I’m cooking, I’ll even turn off the stove before the dish is done cooking since I know that they’ll still be some heat as it slowly cools down.

A Healthy Culture Breeds Competitive Advantage

“I have never experienced a company quite like Softchoice when it came to company culture. No other company has ever so clearly expressed the values that it was all about.  I thought that it might be fun to profile / highlight Softchoice for the article, which is what brings me to you. :-)”

This appeared in my inbox a few weeks ago from an old Softchoice colleague  Lisa Sperow.  It made me a little nostalgic for “the old days” but it also made me think…. We believe that culture is something that sets Softchoice apart and Lisa – who is now a writer and small business coach – wanted me to boil it down for her to share with the readers of her blog. Softchoice Toronto Goes Wildly Green!

This past Friday the Corporate Marketing and Business Development teams joined forces with the Softchoice Green Team to bring Softchoice the greenest, most environmentally friendly, beer cart ever. Dubbed as ‘Green Day’, the event embraced all that is green in celebration of World Environment Day. Unlike other beer carts- and with Mother Nature on our side- the team managed to throw a rockin’ party outdoors; a fantastic way to start the weekend and get people excited for the summer!

So what was so green about it anyway?

As World Environment Day was to be celebrated on June 5th – the team kicked it up a notch by doing their best to reduce the environmental impact of this event. The scrumptious food was local – thus supporting our local community and reducing our Co2 emissions. To be specific, the team ordered fingers foods- meaning no napkins, plates, or spoons which lead to zero waste! We also purchased herbs from a local greenhouse to use as décor for the event and then sold them off for charity- now there’s an idea! [Read more…]

Chicago Green Office Challenge

Softchoice is officially registered for the Chicago Green Office Challenge!  We started by signing up online at www.chicagogreenofficechallenge.org and we entered in our baseline data.  With a rating system they provided and thanks to the great work from the 2009 Softchoice GreenTeam we are already considered a tier 1 company in this challenge.

However, the contest is based on growth so it will take a lot of us to come up with some changes to grow an already great score.  Please let me know if you have any ideas that can help!

Bring a lunch to work day

Before my time on the Softchoice GreenTeam comes to an end I would like to finish with one last project.  Hopefully this is something that will become more of an annual event.  My goal is to try and take as many Softchoice employee cars off the road as I can during lunch.  We would like to set up a day for everyone to either bring in a lunch and have lunch together or they should use some form of green transportation to go get lunch, like walking.
