Six reasons to make man’s best friend, man’s best coworker.

Every dog has its day, and on June 22, thousands of canine best friends are accompanying their owners to work for the 14th annual Take Your Dog to Work Day. But at many of North America’s Best Workplaces – including Google, Amazon and Build-A-Bear Workshop – have already unleashed their employees and let them bring their canine companions to work every day. Of course, Softchoice employees are also happy as a flea in a dog house (in a sense) to have our four-legged friends in the office!

Think you have a dog’s chance of implementing a dog-friendly workplace at your company, these six benefits – for both dogs and employees – may just help you make the case!

People benefits

1) Reduced stress

Results from a study conducted by the International Journal of Workplace Health Management revealed that having dogs in the workplace can be helpful in alleviating workplace stress. In fact, simply petting an animal can reduce tension and lower your blood pressure. Employees who had brought their pets to work reported lowest stress levels, whereas stress patterns for dog owners who did not bring their dog to work appeared to consistently rise during the day. As well, taking walks every day forces you to get off your keister and get moving.

2) Improved communication

The same International Journal study also showed that pooch-friendly workplaces are associated with increased camaraderie, trust and interpersonal communication among co-workers.  The researchers also noted that typically quieter or shy employees were more engaged when dogs were in the office. Why? Because dogs create a common ground that easily kick-starts a conversation and nautrally help break the ice between people.

3) Increased satisfaction

Dog owners who bring their furry companions to work may also find their jobs more satisfying – a great bonus for employee morale! Many employees work longer hours than ever before so bringing their pooch to work versus worrying about them at home alone helps them to be more productive and satisfied at work.  Plus, having a dog at forces employees to take some breaks throughout the day to walk spot. This is known to help foster creativity, productivity and create a much healthier lifestyle. Let’s face it – a ‘dog break’ is much healthier than a smoke break!

Doggy benefits

1) Extra social time

Coming to work means more attention from humans and other dogs alike. It’s important to socialize your puppy so that they get used to a variety of people and environments. Continuing socialization throughout adulthood is also important to prevent your best friend from becoming aggressive, fearful, and anxious.

2) More exercise

It’s a win-win for everyone. You get a healthy break from the desk; and Rover gets fresh air and reduces his or her chance of becoming overweight. A walk during the day also helps burn excess energy so your dog will be more likely to nap quietly for the rest of the day so you can focus on your job.

3) Less anxiety

If left alone at home, your dog has time to get into trouble (new pair of shoes anyone?) He or she may also become bored and lonely – or worse, develop separation anxiety. Instead of resorting to expensive medication to treat health issues caused by stress, it’s much easier just to prevent it in the first place. Your pooch will appreciate a more interesting atmosphere by your side, and you’ll appreciate keeping an eye on him or her too.

If you do decide to bring Spot to the office, don’t forget to bring a few necessities. Toys, a bed, a water dish, a leash, doggy bags, and treats will your pet  feel more relaxed and comfortable in a new environment.
