Five Dog-Friendly Workplace Myths Busted!

dogBen and Jerry’s, Proctor and Gamble, Google and Autodesk – what do they have in common? If you guessed: ‘dog-friendly workplace’ – you’d be right!  But these corporate giants aren’t the only companies welcoming canines – Softchoice is also proud to be a dog-friendly office! And, according to a study by the American Pet Products Association, nearly 1 in 5 workplaces in America have already joined the four-legged workforce.

Of course, many organizations still have concerns about bringing dogs into the workplace. But it’s not as complicated as you might think! Robbie Eddison, Assessment Services Supervisor at Softchoice, owner of Lebowski, and a key member of our Dog Committee, has helped bust the top five myths about bringing dogs to work!

MYTH #1:  Dogs are a nightmare for those with allergies.

busted 2Softchoice proactively implements dog-free zones (kitchens and designated separate office spaces for those with fears or allergies) where pups need to keep their paws off! If you aren’t able to be around pets because of fur and dander, there is always a space for you to work in a safe zone!

MYTH #2: Dogs (especially puppies) heighten stress levels.

busted 4When trained and taught dog manners, pups don’t need to be a disruption. In fact, a study published by the International Journal of Workplace Health Management shows that bringing your dog to work may cut your stress level and provide you with a higher sense of job satisfaction! Having dogs around the office actually helps bring coworkers together more socially and provide a more relaxed atmosphere. In the words of Robbie, “The dogs bring smiles to our faces and help create a less stressful environment.”

MYTH #3: Some dogs are naturally hyper and would be a huge disruption to everyone.

busted 2At Softchoice, we’ve set up a Dog Committee to help keep those misbehaving pooches in line. Each pup has to prove to the Dog Committee that they can handle being part of the Softchoice team. The committee has a three strikes system for misbehaving pooches. They’re then evaluated on whether they’re best suited for Softchoice or another environment.

MYTH #4: Between walking, feeding and playing with your dog, employees won’t get any work done.

busted 3Most dogs just want to be near their master, and will often be happy napping under the desk, or munching on a chew toy. For those times when you do need to take your pup for some exercise, know that taking breaks to walk your dog can actually make you more productive! According to a study from the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, getting 15-30 minutes of exercise during the day positively impacts work output. So, not only are you improving your fitness, but you’ll be able to get your work done more efficiently!

MYTH #5: Dogs are dirty! They carry fleas and could cause hygiene issues in the office.

busted 3Just like people have to maintain a level of hygiene at work, our pooches have to as well. If the dog owner isn’t keeping their pup well groomed or trained to wait for a walk to go to the bathroom, they’ll receive strikes against them. However, to date, we’re happy to say that we’ve never had to ban a pup for having an accident!
