1. You cannot buy perpetual licenses anymore. You can renew maintenance, but you cannot purchase new perpetual licenses with maintenance

Autodesk started switching to subscription two years ago. If you’re an Autodesk customer you know this already. Did you know that most perpetual licenses are 12-15 years old and use maintenance plans to stay up to date?

2. Autodesk wants to move all maintenance licenses over to subscription – and they’re making it easier

When Autodesk stopped selling maintenance licenses, they created a mixed situation for customers. Today, many companies manage some maintenance and some new subscription licenses. This increases cost, management irregularities, and complexity. Autodesk wants to rationalize this into a single way of doing things and help more customers move to subscription.

Beginning in June 2017, you will be able to switch eligible products on maintenance to subscription at the time of renewal. Renewal time is up to 90 calendar days before your maintenance plan end date. Your maintenance plan will remain active until the original end date, and your new subscription will begin the day after your maintenance plan expires.

3. Moving your perpetual licenses to subscription isn’t urgent, but now is a really good time to make the switch

If you have a perpetual license you don’t need to do anything. But there’s a catch: Autodesk will be raising the price of maintenance by 10% next year, and 20% the year after. So you can keep the status quo, but it will be more expensive with a lower level of service. You will also miss out on reducing some of the soft costs associated with managing your software.

Here are some of the key benefits of subscription licensing:

  • Get access to updates on core products, cloud services for desktop products, and more capabilities as soon as they’re available, at no extra cost.
  • You can assign a license to each user, so you know exactly who is using what. Say goodbye to using spreadsheets to track this manually!
  • Your risk of non-compliance is lower when there is zero chance of over-installing software by mistake.
  • When you standardize all your Autodesk products on subscription, you get access to tools that simplify software deployment and management
  • If you need two or more Autodesk software products, you will save more money with available discounts

4. You can switch from maintenance to subscription without uninstalling and reinstalling everything.

If you want to move to subscription, you have to get new serial numbers and abandon the old ones. This sounds easy enough but if you have a large install base, it’s a lot of work for your IT staff.

Autodesk recognizes that some customers have hundreds of seats of software and that some products do not transition to a subscription model that easily. Many products on maintenance plans will be eligible to switch to subscription at the time of renewal. When you choose to switch, you will be required to give up your perpetual license for any seats you switch. You may need to uninstall and reinstall, but you don’t have to do it immediately – it depends on if you are changing products in the process.

5. Whatever you do, do NOT drop your maintenance

About every six months, Softchoice will see a customer who dropped their maintenance. You absolutely SHOULD NOT drop your maintenance. If you let your maintenance plan expire, you will no longer receive benefits granted to you via your maintenance plan. This includes access to software updates, previous version rights, home use rights, global travel rights, support, cloud credits, and cloud services. Additionally, after your maintenance plan has expired, you will not be able to switch to subscription at the discounted price.

Autodesk is going to announce that customers can move their maintenance licenses over to subscription to rationalize the leftover maintenance licenses into subscription licenses. Essentially, Autodesk will cap your subscription costs for the next three years (after three years, there will be a nominal price increase), and it will be the same as what you would have paid for maintenance.
