How to Decide if Your Organization is Apple-Ready

Macs® are invading the enterprise … whether you’re ready or not.

While many organizations traditionally discourage the use of Apple® products due to perceptions of higher costs and incompatibilities with the Windows architecture, many feel the tide has turned. In fact, according to Forrester, almost 50% of North American and Western European businesses now issue Macs to their employees.

One of the key drivers of this trend is the consumerization of IT, something Apple’s largely been credited with starting. One doesn’t need to go further than your own office to see this trend in action. Walk down a hallway or visit the lunchroom, and you’ll see people using their own iPhones® and iPads® to do work. The question you need to ask is – how ready is your business for this consumerization trend?

Does your organization put more energy into the type of technology people use, or on what people do with the technology?

If you’re investing the time and infrastructure in BYOD, then you need to consider supporting Macs to increase employee productivity and satisfaction. However, while consideration is important, the reality is not every company is ready, willing nor able to use Apple technologies.

Rather, the change is happening under the hood, in how Macs and iOS devices can be managed in a corporate environment. As each full version update of iOS adds more functionality and control from an administrator perspective, Apple is adding features to OS X making it more compatible with Mobile Device Management solutions.

What does this mean for businesses? It means they can offer more choice in the BYOD model, where the “D” can now include any model from the current line-up of super-sexy MacBooks.

To break this down, here’s what Apple started doing in OS X Lion: [Read more...]

Blackberry 10: Unboxing, First Impressions & Technical Review (Video)

BlackBerry Unboxing

The new BlackBerry 10 has arrived!

Because Softchoice is part of the BlackBerry Technical Preview Program, we had exclusive access to the technology (handset and server software) before its official release, and I was able to spend a couple of weeks using the device. During that time, I had a chance to form some pretty strong impressions about the new smartphone.

Read on for my thoughts, as well as a bit of a technical deep-dive into the latest offering from Research In Motion. Watch my exclusive unboxing and hands-on review, and then read on for a bit of a deep dive into technical details that business users in particular will care about.
